Kay Murphy, 84, of Columbia and formerly of Clark County, passed away at 10:49 am on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at The Neighborhoods Nursing Care in Columbia.
She was born on April 3, 1938, in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of the late Allen George & Frances (Popel) Murphy. Kay graduated from Kahoka High School in 1955 and shortly thereafter, attended and graduated from Blessing School of Nursing in Quincy, Illinois. In 1958, Kay was elected Miss Quincy, an endeavor that she always remembered fondly. She made her career as a registered nurse, working at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis in the Urology Department for 42 years and later working for Dr. Bucy in St. Louis. Kay enjoyed shopping, visiting with family and friends and attending family “get togethers” such as family dinners and reunions. She loved Broadway musicals and enjoyed jazz music.
Kay is survived by her brother; Donald (Sharon) Murphy of Paris, two nephews; Pete (Sharon) Carter of Columbia, Pat (Katie) Carter of Columbia and by two nieces; Kathy (Stanley) Smeltser of Keokuk, Iowa and Kim (John Jr.) McDaniel of Kahoka. In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in death by three sisters; Connie Murphy, Marjorie Cannon and Barbara Wilson.
Funeral Services honoring Kay’s life will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home in Kahoka. Pastor Rick Addison will officiate. Interment will follow at the Frazee Cemetery in Wayland. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until the time of services. Memorial contributions in memory of Kay are suggested to the Frazee Cemetery.
