Dixie J. Small, 68, of Alexandria, passed away unexpectedly at 1:29 pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at her home.

 

She was born on July 4, 1954, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of the late Miller Mack & Jennie Louise (Land) Hawkins. Dixie married Kent Leeper on May 2, 1970, and to their union, Greg, Jennifer, and Randy were born. Dixie was later united in marriage to Dale Small on December 15, 1989, in Memphis, and he survives.

 

Dixie worked for many years at Sheller-Globe and later at Henniges Automotive in Keokuk, Iowa. Dixie was dedicated to her faith and was a member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Wayland for many years and later at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kahoka. She enjoyed plants and gardening and being outdoors. Dixie enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Her greatest joys came from her family; especially from her grandchildren & great grandchildren.

 

In addition to her husband, Dale, Dixie is survived by five children; Greg (Vickie) Leeper of Keokuk, Iowa, Jennifer Leeper of Keokuk, Iowa, Randy (Ariel) Leeper of Keokuk, Iowa, Andrea (Zach) Travis of Quincy, Illinois and Grady (Kelsey) Small of Alexandria, nine grandchildren; Shaide, Cole, Gavin, Gabbie, Ellie, Breckyn, Abel, Sebastian & Thomas, two great grandchildren; Brayden & Aubrie, six brothers; Sidney “Earl” Cook, Dale Cook, Thomas Cook, Merle Cook, David Cook, Miller Mack Hawkins Jr. & Michael Hawkins, a sister; Daisy Hawkins, and by several nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, Dixie was preceded in death by three sisters; Patricia Haage, Marilyn Kelly and June Martin.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Shrine of St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Patrick. Father Rob Fields will preside. Interment will follow at the Frazee Cemetery in rural Wayland. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the time of services at the church. The Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home of Kahoka have been entrusted with the care and arrangements. Memorial contributions in memory of Dixie are suggested to the family.
