Dorothy L. Boyd, 85, of Kahoka, passed away peacefully at 8:40pm on Monday, July 30, 2024, at Scotland County Hospital in the presence of her loving family. Dorothy was born on June 1, 1939, at Chambersburg, Missouri to Raymond and Alma (McVeigh) Boyd. She graduated from Revere High School in 1958 and was primarily a homemaker aside from her time at the garment factory in Memphis, Missouri. Dorothy married Samuel Peterson and raised 5 children together before his passing. Later, Dorothy would marry Wilfred “Bill” Woods in 1979, and they were together until his death in 1995.
She loved to quilt and embroider and made sure every one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren had a homemade patchwork quilt from “Granny Grunt.” Dorothy sewed clothes, embroidered, and created photo albums of her family. Dorothy loved to dance, and her husband Bill nicknamed her “Flea” because she bounced all over the dance floor like one. Dorothy enjoyed playing Pitch in Memphis and loved her Bingo at the nursing home. Besides visiting friends and family, Dorothy adored driving her car and was looking forward to taking just one more spin. Dorothy was also a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She will be missed by all her loving family and friends.
Dorothy is survived by her children, two sons, Allen Peterson of Vermont, IL and Carroll Peterson of Gorin, MO; two daughters, Debra (Jeff) Briggs-Givens of Arbela, MO and Arveta Peterson of Kirksville, MO; 15 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren; brother Carl (Donna) Boyd of Wheaton, MO; sisters: Alma Finton of Warsaw, IL, Leona Elder of Kahoka, MO and Helen Dempsy of Keokuk, IA.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her 1st husband Samuel Peterson, and her 2nd husband, “Bill” Woods; a son Dennis Peterson; great -grandson Logan Briggs; brothers Charles Boyd and Carroll Boyd; 2 infant sisters, Freda Boyd and Lois Boyd; and son-in-law Paul Briggs.
Funeral Services for Dorothy Boyd will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 5, 2024, at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home in Kahoka. Pastor Mike Wilson will officiate. A burial will follow at the Anson Cemetery in rural northern Clark County, Missouri. Visitation with family present will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, from 11:00 AM until time of service at Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home.
