Edna Schuster, 98, of Kahoka, finally made her escape at 7:25am on February 3, 2025. Surrounded by the love of her family, as the sun was rising up over the Mississippi near Canton, she went home to be with Jesus, Leland and Steve.
The middle child of nine, Edna was born on July 12, 1926 to Victor and Imogene Dieterich Howell. She graduated from Wyaconda High School in the spring of 1944. After her beloved Leland returned home from the front lines of Europe, the two were married on December 23, 1945 and were blessed with over 74 years together!
Edna gratefully spent nearly all of her life in Clark County. Other than during the war after high school and working in Ft. Madison at Schaefer Pen, she worked well into her 80’s in Clark County at Moore Forms, Home Gas and Dadant. Along the way, there was a lot of canning, milking, gardening, riding horses, baling hay, wedding cakes and wallpapering.
Survivors include sons Max (Judith) of Waxahachie, TX and David (Karen) of St. Louis; grandchildren Carisa of Columbia, MO, Steven (Briana) of Nashville, Caitlin (Cody) of Fenton, MO, Sam (Sophie) of Ashland, MO, Shelby and Stanley of St. Louis; brother-in-law Gale of West Point, IA; great-grandchildren Louisa, Felix and Rex; and many nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her son Steve; brother Lloyd Howell and his wife Helen; brother Emory Howell and his wife Freda; sister Almeta and her husband Linley Egbert; sister Evelyn and her husband Paul Teel; brother Dean Howell; sister Iva McKinney and her husband Wayne; brother Glenn Howell and wives Jean and Virgie; sister-in-law Roberta and her husband “Herc” Rule; brother-in-law Richard and his wife Gaylene; brother-in-law Frank and wife “Tots”; sister-in-law Jean Schuster. She was also preceded in death by her close friends Eula, Mabel and Louise.
On those rare occasions when Edna would travel, she could hardly wait to get back Home. She was renowned for her pie crusts and the world’s greatest cinnamon rolls, of which there is no comparison. She had a creative heart, was a talented gardener and a loyal friend. She loved being with family, loved trail riding horses and being on the farm in Chambersburg.
The Schuster’s are especially thankful for the love and affection showered on mom and dad over the years by Jerry and the crew at Wiss & Wiss. We are also thankful for the care and support mom received these last few years as a resident at the Lewis County Nursing Home.
