IRENE BUTLER GORDY
Irene Butler Gordy, age 91, of Kahoka, MO, died Sunday, December 21, 2003 in Keokuk Area Hospital, in Keokuk, IA.
She was born September 22, 1912 in Putnam County, Missouri, a daughter of John W. and Molly Saye Jones.
She married Steve C. Butler on May 11, 1928 and they were the parents of six children.
He preceded her in death on December 12, 1980. She married Melvin Gordy on February 6, 1984.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin, of Kahoka, MO; two sons, Roger C. Butler and his wife, Jeanette, of Alexandria, MO and Norman Butler and his wife, Shirley, of Kahoka, MO; two daughters, Neva DelpheneYates of Kahoka, MO and Joyce McColm and her husband, Larry, of Kahoka, MO; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Butler also of Kahoka, MO; a brother, Raymond Jones and his wife, Lavonne,of Fort Madison, IA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Julia Butler of Union, IA, Loyd and Louise Gordy and Lowell and Linda Gordy, all of Arbela, MO, Doris and Bill Everhart of Carpenterville, IL, Betty Capps of Fayetteville, NC, and Lila Nicholas of Gassay, WV; 11 grandchildren and five step grandchildren: Ronnie Butler, Sheila Jenkins, Kenneth Butler, Debra Pitford, Roger D. Butler, Brenda Sue Butler, Steve Yates, Jim Yates, Curtis Yates, Pamela Britton, Michael McColm, Debbie Pruett, Jenny Kinkade, Patrick Shannon, Vickie Scott and Ricky Boyd; 25 great grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; 3
great- great grandchildren; and, 3 step great- great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Steve Butler; two sons, John and Bobby Butler; a son-in-law, Elmer Yates; three brothers, Earl, Peal and Ross Joines; and, two sisters, Ardena Burris and Christina Creason.
Irene was a member of the former Pentecostal Church at Kahoka. She loved to sing and go with the gospel band when they entertained at nursing homes and other events.
She loved her garden, flowers and chickens. She had been employed for a number of years at the former Swift & Co. but she was first and foremost a homemaker. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother and was always more concerned about others than herself. She loved being with her family and grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings of any kind.
Funeral services are Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastors Mark Lowman and Scott Yates officiating. Mrs. Evonne Adams is soloist accompanied by Mrs. Kathy Wilson. Special music was "Shall We Gather at the River" and "The Last Mile of the Way".
Pallbearers were Steve Yates, Curtis Yates, Ronnie Butler, Kenneth Butler, Mike McColm, Roger D. Butler, and Jim Yates
Burial was in Combs Cemetery at Luray, MO.
Visitation was held at Wilson Funeral Home after noon on Tuesday with family receiving friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials were suggested to the Luray Baptist Church or Combs Cemetery.
