World War II Veteran

Jack H Byers, 98, of Quincy, IL., formally of Kahoka, passed away at 8:14 pm on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Curtis Creek Retirement Home in Quincy, Illinois.

He was born June 15, 1926, in Homestead, Florida. The son of Bertram C. and Agnes N. (Lynch) Byers. He was a graduate of Kahoka High School. On July 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Eva Sue (Barrickman) Byers, and she preceded him in death on January 20, 2001.

Jack voluntary enlisted in the United States Army 43rd infantry. He was a “MP” in the army, a World War II veteran. Jack was a member of the Central Baptist church in Quincy, IL. He worked as a printer at the Kahoka Gazette Herald for 21 years and the Quincy Herald Whig for 22 years. In his younger years Jack and Eva were members of the Q City Square Dance Club and enjoyed the friendships they made with other couples. Jack looked forward to meeting with his regular coffee group that was his retired friends from the Quincy Herald Whig. 

Jack is survived by his daughter: Jackie (Stephen) Harrison of Naples, FL., a granddaughter: Jyl (Nathan) Ourada of Lenexa, KS., 2 great grandchildren: Alexis and Addison of Lenexa, KS., other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his in-laws: Edwilda and Ray York, 2 grandchildren: Stephanie and Brad Harrison, a sister and her husband: Betty (Billy) Fry.

Private inurnment at the Kahoka Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jack H. Byers are suggested to the Kahoka Cemetery and may be left at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home.
