JOHN R. SCOVERN

John R. Scovern, age 90, of Kahoka, MO, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, IA.

He was born April 29, 1918, at St. Patrick, MO, a son of James and Laura Rosencrans Scovern.

He married Marie Dunn and they were the parents of Diane. He later married Elaine Wells and to this union two sons, Jerry and Terry, were born. On January 12, 1968, he married Dorothy Hamilton who preceded him in death on May 24, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Scovern and his wife, Linda, of Belmont, NC, and Terry Scovern and his wife, Tanya, of Springfield, IL; a daughter, Diane Barnett of Hamilton, IL; a step-daughter, Connie Brown and her husband, "Butch" of Fort Madison, IA; six grandchildren: Donna and Allen Rudd of Donnellson, IA, Timothy and Shannon Scovern of Hickory, NC, Heath Scovern of Hickory, NC, Todd and Misty Scovern of Granite Falls, NC, and Cameron Scovern and Jody Scovern, both of Springfield, IL; as well as several step-grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; a step-daughter, Bonnie Rudd; two grandsons, Gerald and James Barnett; two brothers, James and George Scovern; and, five sisters: Dollie Whitaker, Bessie Wilson, Cordelia Sinclair, Juanita Herd and Annie Briggs.

John was a U. S. Navy Veteran and member of Ayer-Boatman Post # 4342, V.F.W. He proudly served his country during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific theater. John worked hard all of his life, beginning by trapping with his brothers as a small boy. He worked various jobs through the years, but was best known as a talented auto mechanic and construction worker specializing in home improvement. He loved being outside - spending time camping, fishing, gardening, and just sitting in the woods while taking a break from cutting wood. In later years, he particularly enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with burial and full military rites following in the Sand Cemetery at St. Francisville. Officiating was Pastor Richard Handyside.

Memorials were suggested to the Clark Co. Local Cancer Fund.
