She was born April 5, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia—the daughter of Ronald Jack and Audrey Fernell (Hobbs) Beaty. On April 18, 1987, she married Eric Carl Doty in Senoia, Georgia, and he preceded her in death on September 5, 2024.

Kimberly was a 1981 graduate of Fort Walton Beach High School. She then furthered her education with an associate degree at Mercer in Macon, Georgia. She enlisted in the United States Navy and served her country for eight years. Kimberly was a Dupont (KBR) designer in Fort Madison, Iowa. In her younger years, Kimberly was a ballet dancer and performed at several theaters. Kimberly spent many hours on the computer researching her ancestry and genealogy, which was important to her and something she enjoyed doing.
