LOLA IRENE GARES

Lola Irene Gares, age 97 of Kahoka, MO, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2019 in the Clark Co. Nursing Home in Kahoka.

She was born October 1, 1921 to George William and Julia Nixon Gares in Anson, MO.

Lola graduated from Kahoka High School in 1939. She taught for four years in Clark County rural schools and two years as a second grade teacher in Kahoka Elementary School. During her teaching years she attended Kirksville State Teacher’s College in Kirksville, MO each summer to further her education.

Lola also worked for the U. A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, IA for over 24 years followed by 17 years as secretary for the State of Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Division. She retired on September 30, 1986. In June of 2010 she moved to Kahoka to be near family after living in Ft. Madison, IA for 65 years.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Madison and the United Methodist Women. When moving to Kahoka, she moved her membership to the Kahoka United Methodist Church. She loved helping at her church and also reading.

She enjoyed attending the Clark County Senior Center regularly.

Lola is survived by two brothers, Harold and Clifford Gares, both of Kahoka; a sister-in-law, Laneta Gares of Monroe City; as well as nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Velda (Cecil) Zollars; a brother, Hilbert Gares; sisters-in-law, Lola J. Gares and Celesta Gares; nephews: Dennis, David, Mark, and Harlan Gares; a great-nephew, Steve Czomba; and a great-great nephew, Carter Adams.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with burial following in the Anson Cemetery. Officiating at the service was Rev. Dan Deatrick.

Memorials are suggested to the Kahoka United Methodist Church, the Clark Co. Senior Center, or the Anson Cemetery.
