MEARL "GENE" COHAGAN
Mearl Eugene "Gene" Cohagan, age 71, of Kahoka, MO, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
Gene was born November 23, 1944 at Keokuk, IA, a son of Mearl J. "Bud" and Gertrude Bartels Cohagan.
On June 1, 1968, he was united in marriage to Theresa Kerr and they were blessed with Clinton and Kelly.
Survivors include his wife Theresa; one son, Clinton (Melanie) Cohagan of Livermore, CA; a daughter, Kelly (Danny) Schofield of Choctaw, OK; six grandchildren: Madison, Claire, Conrad, Mason, Eleanor, and Olivia; one brother, Kirk (Charlotte) Cohagan of Lancaster, MO; mother-in-law, Delores Sims of Fort Madison, IA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Eric (Laurie) Kerr of White Bluff, TN, John (Rose) Kerr of Riverside, CA, Scott Kerr of Burlington, IA, Kenneth (Tracy) Lobberecht of Fort Madison, IA and Mark (Michelle) Lobberecht of Burlington, IA; an uncle, Eston and Mary Bartels of LaFayette, LA; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Margaret "Pete" Cohagan; grandparents: Mearl, Sr. and Hazel Cohagan and Raymond and Lutie Bartels; a stillborn son; and a niece, Katie Kerr.
Gene graduated from Kahoka High School with the Class of 1962 and from Missouri State Teacher’s College.
He taught Industrial and Graphic arts for 30 years, retiring in 1997 from the Clark Co. R-1 School District as well as farmed.
Gene was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka. While the children were growing up, summers and weekends were spent at their cabin at Gregory Landing boating, water skiing, and enjoying friends. Gene loved tractors, cars and car shows, 4-wheeling and golfing. He also loved RV’ing and had enjoyed wintering in Florida and Arizona. Gene loved being around people and his coffee breaks at Wayland. Most of all, Gene loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Nathan Frazee officiating. Recorded music selections included: " Amazing Grace", When I Get Where I'm Going", "The Twist" and "Old Time Rock & Roll". Pallbearers were: Kirk Cohagan, Mike Frazee, Bruce Spurgeon, Brian Springer, James Boatman, and Keith Happs. Honorary pallbearers were: Arthur Barry, Gary Glober, Asa Boatman, David Kirchner, David Kirchner, Gerald Hoewing and Rowdy Bergman. Burial followed in the Frazee Cemetery.
Friends called at Wilson Funeral Home after noon on Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ or St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
