MELVIN D. HATFIELD Melvin Denver Hatfield, age 74, of Kahoka, MO, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 9, 2012 in the emergency room of Keokuk Area Hospital. Melvin was born January 29, 1938, at Gorin, MO, a son of Edward Grover and Grace Maude Garmon Hatfield. He married Virginia Runyon and they were the parents of Florenda Kay and Patrick Allen Hatfield. He later married Carol Hardman and helped raise her son, Kevin Lake. On March 24, 1990, he married Kim York. Survivors include his wife, Kim, of the home; a mother-in-law, Alberta York of Kahoka, MO; one son, Patrick (Julia) Hatfield of Diamond City, AR; a step-son, Kevin (Christy) Lake of Kahoka, MO; four grandchildren: Charles (Annie) Reed of Texas, Derick (Maci) Hatfield of Virginia; Brooke Hatfield of Fort Smith, AR and Shelby Lake of Iowa City, IA; a great grand-daughter, Sophia Alexis Hatfield of Virginia; a brother, Lemuel Hatfield of Memphis, MO; a sister, Izetta Nahar of Blue Grass, IA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Wilma Hatfield of Springfield, MO, Bonnie Hatfield of Arbela, MO, Laverne Hatfield of TX, Sarah Hatfield of Kansas City, MO, Mike (Ronda) York of Kahoka, MO, Vera (Mrs. Ernie) Morris of Medill, MO, Ina York of the Dominican Republic, Thresa (Kevin) Zipprich of Deland, IL, Roberta (Mrs. Shawn) McAfee of Kahoka, MO, Al (Mrs. Jen) York of Champaign, IL, and Martha Jacobson of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Florenda Kay Hatfield; brothers, Elmo, Mason, Leo, Ross, Elmer and Stanley Hatfield; and three sisters, Erma Hatfield, Almeta Mathes and Waneta Mathes. Melvin graduated from Revere High School in 1957. He was a U. S. Army veteran. He was well known in the area as a meat cutter at the Kahoka Locker and later at C & R Market, both in Kahoka. Melvin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kahoka for the past 36 years, a former member of Kiwanis, and former treasurer of the Clark Co. Historical Society. He was very interested in preserving history and in genealogy. He loved working in flowers, watching Nascar, particularly Jeff Gordon, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Kahoka with his nephew, Pastor Kenny Mathes, officiating and assisted by Melvins minister, Pastor Rob Quillin. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers were suggested to his wife, Kim.
