MILDRED L. HESS
Mildred Leona Crandal Hess, age 90, of Kahoka, MO, died Monday, January 2, 2006 in Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, IA.
She was born January 27, 1915 on a farm near Kahoka, MO, in Clark County, a daughter of Frank and Grace Maggart Crandal.
Mildred attended school in Clark Co. and graduated from Kahoka High School in 1932. She taught school in rural Clark County and also was a clerk at Gregory's Variety Store for a number of years.
She married Edward Frederick Hess on November 24, 1937 at the home of her parents southwest of Kahoka and started housekeeping and farming near Kahoka.
Two children were born to this union, Dean Edward and Norma Jean.
They lived on a farm all their married life operating a "Grade A" Dairy Farm for 40 years. Mildred also operated a restaurant at the East Sale Barn for six years, and was a nurse assistant for the Clark Co. Health Department for 12 years. She was a cook at Blackhawk Elementary for six years.
Mildred joined the Methodist Church in Wyaconda, MO when she was 14 years old and later changed her membership to the E & R Church, now the St. Paul United Church of Christ, and was very active in Sunday school and church, Willing Workers Fellowship, and taught Sunday school in the children's department for a number of years.
Mildred was also very active in the community, she was a 4-H Leader, belonged to the Lebanon and Ashton Extension Clubs and quilted for several years at the Senior Center in Kahoka. She loved her family, her grandchildren, her church, and working side by side on the farm with her husband.
Survivors include her two children, Dean Edward Hess and his wife, Kay, of Kahoka, MO, Norma Jean Bonello and her husband, Jim, of Florissant, MO; six grandchildren: Dena Hess of North Liberty, IA, Diane Brueggeman and her husband, Brian, of Creve Coeur, MO, Darla Smith and her husband, Brian, of Mason City, IA, David Hess and his wife, Michelle, of Kahoka, MO, Pamela Nickel and her husband, Jeff, of Lake St. Louis, MO, and, LeAnn Bonello of Shrewsbury, MO; her great grandchildren: Jenna, Tim, and Erin Smith, Katie and Maddie Brueggeman, Drenda, Dereck and Delana Hess, and, Jeffrey, Jacob and Joshua Nickel. Also surviving are a sister, Joanna Newby and her husband, Riley, of Leland, MI; a brother, Robert Crandal and his wife, Vera, of Wayland, MO; brother-in-law, Dale Priebe of Kahoka, MO; and,
sister-in-law, Lois Crandal of Kentucky; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers: Albert, Junior, and Clarence Crandal; and, five sisters: Rosa Mae Crandal, Althea Mohr, Nellie Sutcliffe, Iona Mielke, and, Ruby Priebe.
Funeral services are Thursday, January 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka with Rev. Kenneth Beckmann officiating. Burial is in St. Paul Cemetery.
Friends can call at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the Women's Fellowship of St. Paul Church or to the Alzheimer's Association.
