Raymond Albert Sherrill, 92, of Kahoka, passed away at 3:28 PM on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at his home.

 

He was born on July 3, 1930, in Hamilton, Illinois, the son of the late David Glenn and Mary (Anderson) Sherrill. Ray married Letha (Haage) on April 1, 1956, in Kahoka, and she preceded him in death on July 7, 2022.

 

Ray served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He worked as a farmer and also for Sheller-Globe in Keokuk, Iowa, but primarily as a mail carrier for the majority of his career until his retirement. Ray was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. He was a man of many talents and hobbies, enjoying cooking, sewing, crocheting, collecting antiques and coins, doing yard work, remodeling homes, gardening, traveling yearly to Texas with Letha during the winter months, and was a self-taught pianist. Ray was famous among family and friends for wearing his "1980's shorts."

 

He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Seaver of Kahoka; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Sherrill, Tommy (Melody) Seaver, Janessa (Jason) Erb, Jennifer (Paul) Dobson, David Sherrill, and Anthony (Carley) Sherrill; eleven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Sherrill, Aaron Dodds, Nathan and Nole Seaver, Maverick and Michael Sherrill, Christian, Paige, and Lexi Sherrill, Alexis and Blake Dobson; daughters-in-law, Linda Sherrill of Wyaconda and Melissa Sherrill of Kahoka; sisters-in-law, Goldie (Bud) Laymon of Revere, Esther Justice of Williamstown, and Marjorie Haage of Hamilton, Illinois; a special niece, Terrisa Yates of Peaksville; a special nephew, Larry David Cooper of Hamilton, Illinois; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, Ray was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth and Stephen Sherrill; two grandsons, Adam Seaver and Jason Carrico; his sisters, Edna Day, Ruth Deilling, Esther Nichols, and JoAnn Ferguson; brothers-in-law, Stanley and Kenneth Haage, Earl Day, Gary Justice, Bernard Deilling, Dale Gommels, George Beck, Robert Simmons, and Floyd Nichols; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Beck and Mildred Simmons.

 

Funeral services honoring Raymond's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home in Kahoka. Pastor Shawn McAfee will officiate. Interment with full military rites will follow at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services on Monday.
