ROGER W. SPORY
Roger W. Spory, age 80, formerly of Wayland and Kahoka, MO, died Monday, December 29, 2008, at Lexington Square in Keokuk, IA.
He was born June 14, 1928, in Hancock Co., IL, a son of William "Bill" and Elisabeth Howe Spory. On October 27, 1949, he married Ada Lou Howard who preceded him in death on June 4, 1989. To this union three sons were born. On June 8, 1990, he was united in marriage to Esther M. "Grace" Parker Eggers by Rev. Russell Branch in Wayland. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2008.
Survivors include two sons, Keith Spory and his wife, Marlene, of Edina, MO, and Kent Spory and his wife, Sharon, of Wayland, MO; a daughter-in-law, Sue Houston and her husband, Jim, of Kahoka, MO; two step-daughters, Linda Hymes of St. Louis Park, MN, and Susan Gilbert of Keokuk, IA; fifteen grandchildren: Heather Spory and Dena Plant of Kahoka, MO, Charles William Spory serving in the Marines in Okinawa, Seth and Phillip Spory both of Edina, MO, Casey Head of Wentzville, MO, Karyn Spory of Wayland, MO, David Hoenig of Revere, MO, and Jennifer Wenke of Fort Madison, IA, David Fountain, Annie Fountain and Will Fountain all of Keokuk, IA, Melisa Peterie of Hamilton, IL, Kristina Feikert of Keokuk, IA, and Ross Hymes of New Orleans; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl Spory of Quincy, IL, sisters, Helen Spory and Lylah Bradbury both of Quincy, IL; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; a son, Bill on March 27, 1992; a sister Hulda in 1977; two brothers and a stillborn sister.
Roger worked 27 years at Electro-Metals and twelve years at Gregory Landing. He was known for his popcorn balls at Halloween and peanut brittle at Christmas. He loved to fish and hunt. In later life, he and Grace did lots of crocheting. He was a loving husband and a kind father. He always had smiles and happy greetings for his friends and will be sadly missed in his home and community.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Matt Hoffman officiating. Burial was in the Frazee Cemetery, rural Alexandria, MO.
Memorials were suggested to the Clark Co. Ambulance District.
